Let me guess, you want someone to help you set up the new Apple TV. This guide shows you just how easy it is to set up the new Apple TV. Before I begin, let me tell you about 4th generation Apple TV.
By now it’s common knowledge that the new Apple TV has its hardware and software redesigned. tvOS is the new Apple TV’s operating system, which is iOS based. The interface is like the old one but the new tvOS has introduced SIRI and a full-fledged app store to the Apple TV. Along with that, it has support for the new remote. It also has universal search across all the apps.
The new remote comes with a touch surface and it connects to the set-top box via bluetooth 4.0. Now, there is no need to point the remote at the device anymore. In addtion, there is also a small IR port with which you can control the TV volume and it is rechargeable.
The Apple TV 4th generation has a lot of cool features. If you would like to read about them, Pocket-lint has an article on it. Now, let’s begin with how to set up Apple TV 4th Generation.

To connect your Apple TV, remove the device from the box and unpack the remote. Remove the box under the remote, which has the power lead for the Apple TV device. Keep your HDMI cable ready. If you don’t have one, you need to buy one.
Connect the power lead to the power port on the device and plug in the HDMI cable to the device. Now, connect the HDMI cable to the TV and power lead to a socket. A white light should begin blinking, indicating that the device is turning on. Remember to select the correct HDMI source on your TV.
Step 2. Pair your remote
When the Apple TV switches on, you will need to pair your remote to get started. To pair your remote, click on the trackpad once when the screen shows up.
Step 3: Select language
Once you pair your remote, you will need to select your preferred language. To select the language of your choice, scroll down on the trackpad area of your remote. Scroll to the language of your choice and click on the trackpad once, to select the option.
Step 4: Select region
To select your region, scroll down to the region where you live. Once you highlight that option, click on the trackpad to select it.
Step 5: Siri and Dictation
Once you select the region, the set up will ask if you want to switch on Siri and Dictation. So, here you can chose to use or not use Siri. If you want to use Siri, scroll down on your trackpad to the option that reads “Use Siri” and click on the trackpad to select it. If you don’t want to use Siri, scroll down and then to the right to the option that reads “Don’t Use Siri”. Once again, click on the trackpad once to select that option.
Step 6: Choose how to set up your Apple TV
For this tutorial, we will set up the new Apple TV manually. On the screen that you see, scroll down to the option that reads “Set Up Manually” and click on the trackpad once to select that option. When you do that, the set up wizard will ask you to enter some details. The following steps will walk you through what to do next to complete setting up your 4th gen Apple TV.
Step 7: Connect to a WiFi network
When you see a screen like below, scroll down till you highlight the WiFi network of your choice. Once you highlight it, click on the trackpad once to select it.
Now, you need to enter the WiFi password. To enter the WiFi password, scroll to the left or the right to select the alphabet you need. Click on the trackpad once to select that alphabet. Again scroll to the left or to the right to reach the next alphabet in your password.
If you also have numbers, then you need to scroll down once to the reach the numbers below the alphabets. Again, scroll left or right to highlight the number you need and once you select the number you need, click on the trackpad once to select it. Scroll down to the third row to reach the capitalization options. When you select ‘ABC’ you get uppercase alphabets. If you select ‘abc’ you get lowercase alphabets.
If you need to see the full list of symbols, then scroll to the extreme right to ‘#+-’ and click on it.
To delete any input, scroll to the extreme right in the first row to the back arrow. Click on the back arrow once to delete the character immediately after the cursor. By clicking it many times, you will delete as many characters. If you want to enter a space, then you scroll to the extreme left in the first row to ‘Space’. Click on your trackpad to enter a space. Each click will introduce one space.
After you enter the password, scroll down to the button ‘Continue’ and click on your trackpad once to select it.
This will take you to the activation screen like below, where Apple TV is being activated.
Step 8: Enter your Apple ID and Apple ID password
The screen below shows that the set up is asking for your Apple ID. You do have the option of skipping this step for now. If you want to skip this step for now then scroll down to the last button ‘Skip This Step’. Click on your trackpad once to select it.
If you do choose to skip this step, then you will have to enter it later. Without your apple ID, you can’t access the App Store.
To enter the Apple ID, follow the same method that you used above for enter the WiFi password and after entering your Apple ID, scroll down to ‘Continue’ and click on it.
Once you click ‘Continue’, you will need to enter the Apple ID password. Follow the same method for entering text as you did for the Apple ID or the WiFi password. After you enter the Apple ID password, click on ‘Continue’ by scrolling down to it.
Step 9: Follow the on screen instructions
After you’ve entered the Apple ID and Apple ID password, the set up will ask you for some permissions. So all you need to do is to follow the on screen instructions.
The first screen (screenshot below) will ask you when you want the App Store to need a password. You can select between always requiring, requiring a password after 15 minutes or never requiring. For all my Apple devices, I usually prefer entering my password every 15 minutes. To select whichever option you want, scroll down to it and click on your trackpad once to select it.
Then you will need to confirm whether you want to enable location services or disable it. I always prefer enabling the location services. You can choose to disable it, if you prefer it that way because it wouldn’t affect how your Apple TV functions and performs. If any app requires you to enable the location services, that app will prompt you to do that. So, it doesn’t matter whether you enable or disable it.
Scroll down to the option of your choice, click on your trackpad once to select it and move to the next step.
Now, the set up will ask you if you want to automatically download Aerial screensavers. They are HD videos of different locations from all over the world. Once again, you can choose to either automatically download them or not. To select your option, scroll down and ‘Automatically Download’ will get selected. If you want them automatically downloaded, you can click on it to select it. If you prefer to not have them automatically download to your Apple TV, scroll to the right to select ‘Not Now’.
Would you like your usage and diagnostic data sent to Apple directly? This will help Apple understand how users use their product. I prefer sending my diagnostic and usage data to Apple. Once again, if you would like to send it to Apple, scroll down and ‘Send to Apple’ is automatically highlighted. So you select it by clicking on it. If you don’t want your data sent to Apple, scroll to the right instead and select ‘Don’t Send’ by clicking on it.
Now the set up will ask you if you want to share your app activity and crash reports with the App developers. By sharing this data with them, they can make the user experience much better. Once again, follow the same method as you did for sharing your diagnostic data with Apple. Once you select either of the options, the set up will take you to the ‘Terms and Conditions’ screen.
You need to click on ‘Agree’ to use the Apple TV. So you click on the trackpad once to confirm that you agree with their terms and conditions.
Step 10: Initial Setup complete
Once you do all the above steps, you’re almost done with the steps to set up the new Apple TV.
At this point in your Apple TV 4th gen set up, the set up will prompt you to turn on automatic download of your apps. This option is to download all the apps with Apple TV support, that you download on other Apple devices. I prefer to keep this setting switched off.
To automatically download the apps, scroll down to ‘Turn On Automatic Downloads’ and select it. If you want to keep this setting switched off, scroll to ‘Cancel’ and select it instead.
Step 11: Update your Apple TV
To complete setting up the new Apple TV, you need to confirm that the tvOS is up-to-date. If it isn’t the latest OS, then you need to update it by following the on-screen instructions.
Follow the steps below to confirm the tvOS version is the latest. In your home screen, scroll down and to the right or the left to the settings icon. Click on the settings icon.
In the ‘Settings’ menu, scroll down to the menu option ‘System’ and click on it.

It will also show which version of tvOS you are currently running and if your tvOS isn’t up-to-date, select ‘Update and Install’.The OS will update and install itself. After it returns to the Home screen once installation is complete, you are ready to use your new Apple TV and with that you are done with the Apple TV 4 setup.
