How to Create a Basic Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 Presentation
Many people, who are otherwise proficient in Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel, hardly have had an opportunity for creating a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation. I will, through this article, try to explain, in simple terms, how to create a basic microsoft powerpoint 2003 presentation.
There are many instances in which an individual may be expected to complete a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint 2003. If you have been placed in this situation, you will find that it can be overwhelming. With this course, you will be able to gain an understanding of the basics in creating your first successful presentation.
When opening up Microsoft PowerPoint 2003, you may find yourself trying to make sense of all of the information on the page. At this point, the main thing that you should focus on is the area that is white and blank. This is the main part of any presentation that you find yourself creating.
The blank area that you see will contain a placeholder that instructs you to type text. When and if you are ready to begin, you can simply start with a title for the project that you are working on. You may find that the placeholder is simply too small to type what you want. All you have to do is place your mouse on the bottom corners and drag until it is the appropriate size.
As you work on creating a presentation in the software, you will notice a group of squares that are lined up vertically on the left side of the page. These are the “slides” that make up the main part of your presentation. It simply outlines them in this manner so that you may keep up on where you are.
Once you have typed the information that will be placed on the initial slide of the PowerPoint project you are working on, it is time to create a new slide. This can be challenging without instructions, but seeing that you have this tutorial, it will be really simple.
- Go to the left hand side of the screen where you see your first slide that you have been working on.
- Place your cursor over the thumbnail picture of the slide, and click the right mouse button. You will see a menu appear.
- On the new menu, you will want to select the option named “new slide”. Left click on this option. A new slide will then appear, all ready for you to work on!
It is important to know and understand how to insert text into the slides on the Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that you are creating. You can add it all sorts of ways, but for the beginner, simply clicking in the box and typing is often the easiest method of adding words.
If you want to move between the slides that you are working with, you can simply click on the thumbnails of the slides to the left. Many individuals elect to move between slides by using the “Page Up” and “Page Down” buttons on the keyboard. This is a personal choice, but for beginners, I recommend using the “Page” buttons on the computer keyboard.
Now that you are comfortable with creating basic slides, and entering text, it is important to consider the overall design of your presentation. If you are creating a professional presentation, it is absolutely necessary to ensure that you take special care in choosing the best decorative theme. Appearance is everything in the presentation!
On the page that you are working on, you will see an option named “Slide Design”. You should click on this option to open it up. You can select from any of the following:
- Design Templates
- Color Schemes
- Animation Schemes
For this basic lesson, we will simply choose a template to design the slides in our presentation. This is SO easy that it will surprise you! All you have to do is simply click on a thumbnail of a slide to the left of the page, and click on this “Slides” page. You will then select “Design Template”. Once you do this, a new window will open.
On this window, you will see numerous preloaded design templates that can be applied to your presentation. The choice is yours! Simply scroll down through these until you find one that you prefer, and click on the one that you choose. Instantly, the template will be applied to all the slides in your presentation! How easy was that?
You are now ready to preview the basic PowerPoint presentation. All you have to do is click “view slideshow” at the top of the page, and the show will load. Many times, you will use your direction buttons to flip through the pages of your show. When ready, press the “Esc” button on your keyboard to go back to the work area in PowerPoint.
Once you are happy with the presentation from PowerPoint 2003, simply go to the “file” option and save the presentation. You can also elect to “package to CD”. You will need a blank CD and a burning option on your computer for this. It will automatically save the project, and you are ready to start the show!
