Text Formatting to Change Paragraph Spacing

Text Formatting to Change Paragraph Spacing

In this topic, we will discuss about Text Formatting to Change Paragraph Spacing. In the earlier topics, we learnt how to indent the entire paragraph, either on the left or on the right side as well as how to achieve first line or hanging indents. In this topic, we will cover spacing between paragraphs, either before a paragraph or after a paragraph.

Referring to the Graphic on your left, we will cover options under "Spacing". Using Menu Bar, go to Format -- Paragraph and within Paragraph, go to tab "Indents and Spacing".

Under "Spacing", there are two options; Before and After.

  • By using "Before", we can increase or decrease spacing before the paragraph in question.
  • By using "After", we can increase or decrease spacing after the paragraph in question.

In both the above cases, we can decide the amount of spacing by using the field next to "Before" or "After". We can, either, leave the setting at "Auto" so that the system decides the default spacing, or, we could specify the actual spacing required by using the Up or Down Arrow Keys next to "Auto".

Given below are examples of paragraphs where we have used Text Formatting to Change Paragraph Spacing. In all these examples, the cursor is positioned on the second paragraph. You will notice that when you use "Before", the space increases after the first paragraph and when you use "After", the space increases after the second paragraph. While using the options "Before" and "After" on examples 2 and 3, we have used a paragraph spacing value of 36 points.
